3 years ago, when I turned 50, I realized that I had put on considerable weight after stopping smoking.  I found your web site, and a stong dose of determination.  On May 15, 2002, I weighed 202.  My plan was to burn 300-500 calories more a day than I took in.  I made myself a spread sheet and set REALISTIC goals. I only weighed myself once a week-same day-same time.  Each day I kept track of calores in and calories burned; I didn't go to bed unless I met my 300 goal (I would get on my ski machine instead).  I started waliking, then walking fast, then running.  Not always a pretty sight on the highway, but I am now able to do a 5K.  Hiking in the mountains 3-4 times a month in the good weather really burns up calories. I watched what I ate-no more bowls of ice cream.  One tablespoon was the limit.  NO more bagels with coffee at work with the gang.  Maybe a corner of one.  Light beer.

On October 3, 5 months later, I met my goal of 168 pounds (I am 5'11" and big boned) and after 3 years, I still feel great.  I have given myself a 7-10 pound "flucuation" (winters can be nasty)-but do not obsess over the weight.  I know how and what to eat, I know what to do for exercise, and it has become a life style change for me. The roads are easier to run.  The mountains easier to climb.  Wearing a size 10 or 12 instead of a tight 16 is TERRIFIC!!

Thanks for your web site.  It has made a big difference in my quality of life!

Thanks for your reply.  Do NOT give up.  The important thing is to be realistic in your goals and to find a way that works for you. I have had dozens of people I know ask me what special diet I used (because so many dieters put the weight right back on).  Counting calories sounds like a bother, but it really only takes about 5 minutes at night to use the web site-and it puts things in perspective.

Good luck!!!

You're truly inspiring...I'm definately keeping your success story in mind (also knowing that two people are not the same and won't have the same success rate) but never the less, congrats.
