I bought a bike in the spring (comfort style, sort of cross between road and mountain bike). The idea was just something to do for a little excercise.
I started to ride it to work everyday (weather permitting). Ride was about 20 miles a day. only increased my commute by about 15 minutes one way. I brought clothes in a bag on the back of the bike. Sweat was not a big issue. I would just sit in my office for about 15 minutes while cooling down, then get dressed.
I lost about 10 lbs over the summer doing this and made major inroads at improving my blood levels/cholesterol/etc.
Sadly, winter is here, so the biking is done inside on rollers, but there is also X-country and downhill skiing.

When I got a treadmill I got a little TV to go in front of it. I tape good stuff and watch it later.
Not as nice as the outdoors, but it beats staring at the wall!

The device I bought for the bike is a set of rollers, seemed too simple, just pedal fast enough to keep upright, then maybe watch TV while pedaling.
WOW, first day I manage about 15 minutes. So much harder than just riding a bike as you have to concentrate like mad to keep the bike tracking in a straight line. and day, I get cocky and looked around the room too much and fell over! After about 15 minutes on it, the sweat is just dripping off!
Now I can manage about 30 minutes on it, followed by either a rowing type machine workout, or calistenics, then stretching. I typically can get home in time to see the start of the 5 pm news and just watch that while riding, since most of the news is listening anyway. It works for me!

| Yes, I did have to go with more of a slick-type road tire, also much narrower. I should have ordered them when I ordered the rollers. WOW, smooth tires made it so much easier!

Uh Oh! Good question. I will have to dig. It took awhile to find them since most out there were more $$$ than I wanted to spend.
K, I checked and the company that I ordered from back in Nov. is now owned by Performancebicycle.com. here is the link to the product. I believe mine were about $10 cheaper (the one on the right)

I pedal 20 miles a day hauling (300+ lbs of) myself on a fat tire mountain bike and boy when the wind is blowing against me its really rough.
Everyday my legs are sore from the previous days ride HAULING MY 300+ lb body.
I figure I burn up 1700 calories from the ride, and eat 1200 calories per day which leaves a deficite of 500 calories added to my RMR of 2771 which I would burn about roughly almost a pound a day 3000 calories approx.

Sounds like you need to eat more! You really should try and limit the daily deficit to around 500 to 1000 calories, while still consuming the calories that your body needs.
I just bought a new bike. I am now living in yet another hotel in Cleveland, and decided to get back into shape again(hmmm, 2nd time this year that I have said that). I have been slacking the last month, while getting acclimated to a new job.

| I bicycle to and from work every day, one of two people in my office who does so (I get lots of astonished commentary). It's a short ride and only takes me about five minutes depending on traffic, so I don't know if I'm really getting much of a fitness benefit from it (though I suppose every little bit helps). Not to digress from the subject, but my major benefit is financial! With gas at ~3.00 USD/gallon and letting my car sit instead of submitting it to all the stop-and-go city driving, I figure I'm saving quite a bit of money. :D

For most of the time I've been losing weight, my aerobic exercise has been jogging. However, I made the mistake of running on loose packed sand while on vacation. I really hurt my knee (illiotibial band or ITB) after runnung for several days on uneven surfaces. Part of my plan to rehab my knee has included digging out my old road bike and riding it.
I have been making 20-45 mile rides (depending on time available) and have been really enjoying it. As my knee heals, I find myself making extra time to get both running and cycling (as well as weight lifting) into my schedule. I think biking is a great, low-impact weigh of burning calories and strengthening leg muscles and joints.

Doh , I blew a spoke about 20 miles from the house today. You get even more exercise when you have to carry the bike. I carried the bike down the trail until I got to a road where my wife could pick me up.

I totally agree. Until a couple months ago I was running. I then injured my knee while working on my house so I bought a bike. Now I dont see myself getting back into running until there is to much snow/ice to bike in. I enjoy biking more because it breaks down the body less which enables me to bike more and I now burn about 2 to 3 times the calories then I did running. I started biking to work a few weeks ago which is about 19.4 miles a day. Now I am losing about 2-3 pounds a week instead of 1-2.
Keep it up!

| Little time? i go to school and i get out at 3:12pm everyday, i have to clean stalls everday which takes about 30 minutes and when i don't have hw i can bike. My main question is how to you know how fast you are going? i worked out my cal and i have to burn 2795 cals a day to lose a lb a week!! but... i know i can burn about 200 or 300 something doing about 5 mph or something... how will i know how fast i am going?? i'm also going to try some situps and other things as well as eating :) i'm giving up soda and all sweet things :D.

You can figure out your average. Speed is distance over time. You presumably know the distance you are cycling (or can use googlemap or some other website to figure it out) and you can use your watch to see how many minutes it took you.
example: 2 miles in 24 minutes.
2 / 24 * 60 = 5 -> So 2 miles in 24 minutes is 5 miles per hour

The Bicycling Calculator lets you enter the time and distance (and your weight) and it calculates your speed and calories burned.
