 I cant belive this stuff! If anyone is trying to diet or wants to diet and is on Depo provera, ladies, get off that stuff! I was on Depo for 3 years. I used to be a size 9, bigger build bu for me a size 9 was awesome. Over the past 3 years I gained something like 50-60lbs. My eating habits were off, I admit, but then I tried to diet and ecorporated working out for 2 hours 6 days a week, and doing pilates 6 days a week. Nothing. 3 months into that health program and absolutely nothing happened. I was so devastated. So I talked to my fiance and we decided to NOT rely on the Depo anymore so I could go off it and see if maybe that what was making me gain the weight. Lo and behold, since I stopped Depo, started eating the right size portions, stopped drinking, and work out 6 days a week, I have lost 12 pounds in 2 weeks. I know that sounds ridiculous and unhealthy but it isnt. I hope to keep on losing til I get back to my natural size. So to all the women out there on Depo. Get off it as soon as you can if you are upset about even a little weight gain. I can promise you it will just keep on packing itself on to you. You can do it :)

Shelly, one very inspiring woman, wrote her story about Depo Provera and how she overcame the diseases she got because of it.

She says on her website rawandjuicy.com:

"While depo provera was by far the worst thing that has ever happened to me in life, it was also the best thing to have ever happened to me too! Had I not fallen so desperately ill I do not know if I would have ever made a change to this new lifestyle of natural hygiene (plant-based vegan diet, raw food, exercise, physical and mental rest, sunshine, pure water, fresh air). I believe everything that happens to us in life happens to us for a specific reason. I wholeheartedly believe that God intended for me to learn the lessons of natural hygiene and that is why I had to take the journey I did. Whether it was just to help myself, or whether it was for the purpose of being able to share my information with others.. I'll never know. One thing is for certain, I'm thankful for it. "

Well now, being that the negative is here I guess I should use my keyboard to show the other side of the coin.

I too am on the Depo shot and have been for years. Without it I am sure I would be divorced, jobless and childless. I would have lost it all to PMDD. PMDD is a severe case of PMS, I guess you could say. I was a freak.....and I mean FREAK. For two weeks a month I would be edgey, emotional, rude, heck downright evil I think. I would be easily frustrated with myself which in turn would make me angry at myself and whomever was standing around me. AND to add fuel to the fire come February - March I would turn into an even more...well witch. My body needed the sun and I suffered from that silly little thing called SADD. Yes, I too had troubled believing that one. I could not take it any more so my doctor says to me I would be a perfect person for the Depo shot....no periods = no PMS....not to mention no acne, no bloating, no headaches, no weird food cravings, no lashing out at the world...nothing that is associated with PMS.

Guess what? It worked. By taking the Depo shot alone I could face the world without fear of lashing out and now with working out and eating right my life has changed dramatically. No longer do I fear the approach of my period, no longer do I have to worry about taking a pill....once every 3 months I am set. The only side effect I have is at about the 3 month mark my hip where I get the shot starts to ache a little. I think it is reminding me to get to the doctors...*snicker*

The pill too has side affects for some women, so do many other medications. This may not work for you, but you have to remember that for some it is a miracle.

If you are on depo please read!!:shock:I was on depo continuously for over 5 years, and loved it!  I never suffered any weight gain side effects, however I did on ortho tricyclen (guess every body is different).  If you have been on depo for an extended period of time you may want to consult your physician.  My OBGYN told me that staying on depo for years at a time can affect your bone density and suggested I switch to another form of birth control.  The FDA also added a new warning concerning bone density to depos label.  I know when I was on it I didn't see a label with my injections.  For more info I recommend http://www.msnbc.msn.com Just a heads up!

I too took Depo Provera for about 2 years.  I also gained weight and not only lost interest in sex, but even lost interest in being around my husband.  I was depressed and It was a very horrible low point in my life.  It was like I was in a fog for two years. If it works for other issues, great, but I would not ecommend it to anyone as soley a birth control option.

I have been on Depo for two years.  Been diagnosed with Auto-immune disease, hypothryroidism and have gained 25 lbs in the last 8 months.  I eat a very healthy portion diet and also go to the gym doing 45=60m of cardio 5-6 days a week.  How long did it take you to start loosing weight after you got of off the depo?

Well, during the weight-gain, I was in a 'comfortable' relationship with my then-boyfriend, so he didn't really mind about the weight-gain; he used to say "more of you to love"
lol
But we broke up about 6-8 months later, and when I found myself back on the dating field, I realized I didn't have that much confidence in myself
I tried many things 'Half-Assed', which is to say I didn't have the motivation or the drive I have now
I'd start something for a week or two, not see any IMMEDIATE results, get discouraged and eat like a fiend

I moved up north for a job this past summer, where I was basically stuck in the woods and only had a chance to buy my own food every two weeks
About 2 months later, I had lost 12 lbs, without even TRYING!

When I got back in October, I had a fast-food craving like MAD, so I ended up gaining 4lbs back from all the junk I had missed whilst away

3 weeks ago I hit rock-bottom and decided to REALLY get serious about eating better and getting off my butt! And since then, I've lost 7 lbs!

Since it took me a long time to get motivated, I can't really say how long after you stop using Depo you can start losing weight...I didn't even TRY for months after

I would say after 3 months all of the medication should be out of your system, since you get a shot every 3 months...just makes sense I guess :)

GOOD LUCK on your weightloss journey, and don't get discouraged! YOU CAN lose the weight...just takes determination!

when being on those depo shots you seriously have to watch your fat intake. those shots goes straight to your stomach AND BELIEVE ME, I'VE SEE IT WITH MY OWN TWO EYES!!!

i've gone to school with tons of females that have been on the those shots, before they could eat whatever and not gain, so as they were getting those shots, the weight began to pack and it went right to the stomach. a lot of them i thought they were pregnant but it was them on those birth control shots.

I've been on it for over a year now and have had absolutely no ill side effects.  I lost weight because I cut out my calories by about 2/3.  Plus I exercise about an hour 5x per week.  Depo couldn't compete with that!

Are you guys sure you're keeping your calories around 1200-1500/day?

I was more worried about the libido thing with Depo, but that wasn't a problem either...I had more of that problem w/the pill.

I appreciate people who have had a negative experience to warn others about what they went through and to proceed with caution.  But it's not fair to make a blanket statement that it's generally bad all-around.  Every woman's body and chemistry is so different.

ALL my weight problems stem from being on the pill. I started taking it in my teens to help my painful periods. When I went to the doctor to raise my concerns that I was putting on weight and I thought the pill was to blame, she poo pooed my sugestion and said "You can only gain weight if you eat more", basically suggesting the weight gain was down to my gluttony and nothing else. Most of us on this site know that there are so many
more factors involved in weight gain. All I know is that I never had to think about watching my weight before I went on it but I have struggled to keep it down ever since, despite coming off it years ago. I also believe the pill is what started off an inbalance in my intestinal flora (candida infection) that has caused me many other problems.
Corrie, perhaps these women weren't sticking to their calorie limits - but cravings are pretty powerful things and hormones are too. If these drugs make you crave the wrong foods it can be very hard to stay in control. I would never mess with my body's natural balance again - I have to put up with painful periods and PMS but I've found that taking care of my health (diet, exercise, plenty of sleep) lessens these symptoms anyway. What's the point of leading an unhealthy lifestyle and taking drugs to mask the effects of it. Of course, I know that for some people these drugs are the answer. But don't patronise the people who have had adverse reactions by suggesting the problem was in the minds and only down to how may calories they ate!!

I think I said every woman's body chemistry is different, which suggests that I do acknowledge that the pill/depo isn't for everyone.  But the original poster made an edict for ALL women to get off Depo ASAP...which I think is a bit radical, considering, as I said, we're all different.

Either way, you need to burn more calories than you consume, which is why I reiterate 1200-1500 cals.  So obviously if you're convinced the chemicals in the pill are making you eat more, off-setting your balance in whatever way, it's wise to stop taking the pill or depo.

I just started depo provera for severe peri menapause symptoms. I actually have not gained weight, my mood is far more stable, my periods are almost non existent now and I have no decrease in sexual libido. I was so afraid of these side effects, yet I have always exercised, and eat healthy. Perhaps the side effects are different for everyone, yet if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, from research, articles on this, it is rare to have the effects you are experiencing, and is the opposite of what this medication is suppose to do, so maybe you need to look at other things to blame rather than this medication.

I took the shot in July and again in September and I completely changed. I gained 30 pounds quickly, was so fatigued and tired all the time, unmotivated, sad, crying and severly depressed. It totally f-ed up my sytem. I have not had a regular period in 7 months. I just pray this stuff gets out of my system soon and I can return to a healthy person again. My advice to anyone,
DON'T TAKE IT!

Although I love not getting my period while on this shot, I too gained weight. When I tried to lose the weight it was like there was no use!!!

Once I stopped the shot, I was able to diet properly and it worked :)

i am so sleepy, tired, moody, and overweight! HOWEVER, i did gain weight during the 3 years i was on the pill. i recently switched over to the depo shot about a month ago- yet...i have no idea wether to believe that it is my eating/exercise habits? or the pill prior to this depo shot, however many people have told me that the depo shot continues to make the person gain weight- i am frightened that this gaining weight cycle is simply never going to end. i have to admit, recently it has been all i can think about. what am i doing to my body? :nono:

Depo Provera has ruined my entire self confidence and self-image. Before I started the shot a year and a half ago, I was about 120 pounds, and a size 3 in jeans, a healthy weight for me. At first when the weight gain started, I didn't notice it as much and ignored it, assuming it would fall off like it usuallyl did. Then suddenly, in the course of three months, I ballooned about 30 pounds. I had no idea what was going on, and started to cut my calorie and carb intake and work out 6 times a week, and nothing. The number on the scale didn't move one bit, and I was devastated.

I finally noticed something odd about 6 months ago- about three days after taking the shot, I would mysteriously get bloated for a few days, and conveniently gain 6 pounds just like that. No increase in appetite, and no less exercise than I normally do. I am now 20 and weigh about 170 pounds, and have just discontinued the shot and went back to the pill. May 8th would be the day I would get my shot, but I have already started taking the pills to regulate them, and I already feel better; less bloated, less depressed, etc. My metabolic panel and thyroid tests came back about 5 days ago, and thankfully they are all normal.

However, I am worried. Is there an estimate on how long it takes for the weight to drop, if it even will? And what exactly makes you gain the weight??? I also have not had a period since last July, and am frightened that something may be wrong, even though my doctor said it was okay...it seems odd to me.

Thank you everyone for sharing their stories, it makes me feel much better to know I wasn't the only one dealing with such a problem :)

I've had kind of a reverse affect with the Depo. I started the shot just recently, about 2 months after having my daughter. I weighed about 115 before I got pregnant and I only got up to 130 during my pregnancy, I was all baby. After the shot, I started what seems to be the never ending period. Every day for 9 weeks so far, going on 10. I'm hoping once the shot is out of my system, the period will finally stop, as I can't make an appointment with my doctor till after the 1st of next month. But since the shot, I have been slowly losing weight. I think it might be due to the bleeding but after I lost the baby belly I weighed 112 (I'm 5 ft 3in). And according to all the BMI calculators I'm now under weight, which is not what I want at all. I now weigh 101 and it's slowly dropping, no matter what I eat. I've even tried drinking those whey protein shakes. I got on the shot because I was told it would probably stop my periods completely or at least make them lighter. This was great news to me as I frequently get ovarian cysts and they make my periods painful. They neglected to mention the part where it might do the exact opposite. I've tried the pill before but it just did pretty much the same thing.
It also has messed with my mood, making me more depressed than usual. I mean, I'm dealing with a deployed husband and trying to take care of our daughter almost on my own, but this is different. I can usually handle stress pretty well, as I deal with it frequently. But it's almost like I'm pregnant all over again with all my hormones. One minute I'm fine then the next I'm crying over something so small. And it's really got my libido on the fritz.
I know every medication does different things with different people, and I'm just wondering if anyone has had these same problems. It's getting to be really frustrating and all I can think about is the 27th, which is when I was supposed to get my next shot, and hoping the nightmare will be over shortly after that.

I have been on the depo shot for almost 2 years, I have suffered from large amount of weigh gain, I went from being a size 8 to a size 14 and a size small to a size large, I have very low self esteem and want something done about my body image, I cannot lose weight at all.. whenever I try and run I have weak bones and my ankles crack! I get cramps and food cravings, I've lost interested in sex at all and its ruining my relationship... I get bad mood swings and get upset and depressed easily. I really would like to get some confidence back with my body, so what will happen when I get off the depo, will I start seeing changes straight away or does it take a while' please help, in desperate need to keep my life happy and running smoothly again!

Im 18, and I just got on the depo shot, mainly to control my periods, and be prepared JUST IN CASE something happened, (just starting college),  and i had researched and heard from friends about the side effects, so i got the shot knowing what its potential was. I got the shot a few days before i was supose to have my period, and i heard that if you do that, there is a chance you could have a little bit of bleeding on the shot, but i never did...

. I got the shot in my stomach, and the first day i had a small headache. the second day i was a little tender in the shot area, but other than that i was fine. i bought a scale to monitor my weight just in case, that way i can check for weight gain. It didnt come. maybe im just lucky, (as we all know, the shot isnt for everyone,) but in my case its great.

I have a higher appitite and i find myself craving bread but NO WEIGHT GAIN! i know i was very shocked.. cuz i try to stay away from carbs.

Before the shot i usually didnt eat breakfast because i woke up early in the morning and food made my stomach upset if i ate that early. Now usually I eat three times a day... and i find myself hungry in the morning and able to eat breakfast :)... but once again, still no weight gain... i step on the scale and i see it slowly going down... but some days it lingers between a few pounds and i maintain, so i just watch what i eat that day, and im back to losing weight.

before i was on the shot i was drastically losing weight. I made up my own diet taking in tons of protein, fat, and veggies ... i strayed away from to much carbs (under 51 grams per day) and i didnt eat alot of sugar unless it was from fruit (still under 50 grams a day though).  I was loosing anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds a day. so that could also be one of the reasons why im not gaining weight on the shot.

i also never have headaches, i never bled on the first few weeks of the shot, and im actually very surprised (sense i was so close to my period)

Im a virgin so i dont think the no sex drive thing applies to me, cuz i dont really know... but in that catagory i feel the same as i did before the shot.

Another side effect was loss of bone density, but if you drink milk and eat cheese, or take calcium supliments you should be fine.

Its strange that i have no side effects. in fact it almost seems like im not on it at all.
But it is weird that i show no signs, or side effects, maybe im lucky or maybe there's something wrong but i hope im just lucky

Another thing that alot of people worry about is being infertile or unable to have a child after many years of taking the shot, but i am very career oriented and dont plan on having children for many, many years... And lets say i do become infertile for some reason, i can always adopt.. why bring more children into this world, if there are thousands of kids already here without a loving family...
oh well though, now im going off on a tyrant.

Im just saying there are woman who have many side effects and some who have few, or none (like me) , but just remember the shot isnt for everyone and if you are considering it just ask your doctor, or research before you do. and try it if you must, but there are many birth control tecniques out there so use the one that best fits you.

I have been on depo since I had my son back November 2006. I was 150 very happy with myself. Six years later I weigh 236 lbs and very unhappy. If i knew what I have learned about depo I never would of gone on it.I thought with going on the shot it would make my life simpler because I would only have to remember it every three months. No one explain anything about the different birth controls just asked which one I wanted. My shot is due this month and I am thinking about stopping it for good. I hate being this weight. I have tried many ways to lose weight and nothing seems to be helping. I hope there is a chance when I get off the shot that I can start losing weight. It is nice to read success stories to give me a postive outlook on there is a chance. I don't want to lose 100 or anything crazy like that my ultimate goal would be 150 in the future. My feet hurt, back hurts, don't like way I look. :crying::crying::crying: I am also nervous because I have read so many horror stories of women coming off the shot!
