3500 calories equals one pound. We all know that or we wouldn't be here, but that one little bit of information, had huge implications for me. I realized that 3500 calories equaled one pound when I was 25; it equals one pound now that I'm 54; it will still equal one pound when I'm 90. Fat and age are not inevitable.
I also realized that it doesn't matter when I consume 3500 calories or how I divide it up. It equals one pound at noon and it still equals one pound at midnight. 5 X 700 = 3500, but 2 X 1750 also equals 3500.
I also realized that for purposes of weight gain or loss, 3500 calories worth of butter is the same as 3500 calories worth of apples.
After I realized all that, it became easy for me. If I seemed to be stuck, it was because my calculations were wrong. If I cut 3500 calories or burned off 3500 calories, I would lose one pound - every time. The first pound I lost was 3500 calories. The last pound was 3500 calories too.
Now, I'm going to go burn off last night's french fries.

Believe it or not, one of the most common problem for visitors to our forums is that they think they can accelerate weight loss by cutting calories like that (1750 per day). Unfortunately it does not quite work that way. What It Takes to Lose It All
Also, apples may be healthier than butter. Good Fats and Bad Fats
On the other hand, if you eat too many apples (or any other food you consider to be healthy) you will surely gain. Green salads are hard to overeat, but most other foods can be overeaten.

Actually many people have been confused by different (confusing) diets for so many years that they have never come to understand the basics. That's what this website is all about.
Thanks for your post,

| It's one year later and I lost the last 4 lbs that I wanted to lose, some months back. I'm still counting calories, but I can do most of it in my head these days. I still don't worry about "good carbs" or "bad carbs", or the thermic effect of food. I have no idea how many grams of protein, fat, or carbs I consume. I see no reason to complicate matters. I had blood work done two weeks ago; my cholesterol and blood sugar are normal and my blood pressure is on the low side of normal. I must be doing something right.
