I decided to post about my success (without sounding like I am bragging) with SLD for two reasons. Firstly, because I am so blown away by how effortless it was. Lastly, because maybe my success will help others struggling with weight issues that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
I have been struggling with my weight ever since I had a bout with depression in my early forties and ended up taking anti-depressants for anxiety and depression. The meds wreaked havoc on my metabolism and I found it impossible to lose weight. It seemed like all I could think about was what I would eat next. Food became (pardon the pun) all- consuming. Even when I was finally able to get off of the drugs I still found I could not lose weight. Well actually that is not true I could lose weight if I stayed on a diet long enough but it was it was short lived and then I would gain the weight I lost and a little extra for good measure. I tried so many diets and spent a fortune on powders and pills and books that promised but did not deliver. Every few weeks I would start a new diet that I was sure would be the answer. I would always end up feeling dizzy and hungry and disallusioned and end up cheating beat myself up for cheating and then just giving up until I discovered the next new diet. By the time I reached 189 pounds I was frustrated and depressed and starting to believe I would never be thin. That is until I watched a Canadian news program featuring Dr. Seth Roberts.
I am by nature quite a shy person so posting on a forum is something I don’t usually do but after seeing Seth Roberts on the CBC Sunday report. The description of a diet that lets you eat fat and sugar and pretty much anything you want and still lose weight caught my eye and I decided to check it out to see what it was all about. I think when I first signed on to the forum there were about 40 people and now look how much it has grown, amazing!!
I was able to start the program the next day (Monday May 1/06) just by the information I found online and on this forum but ordered the book to make sure I wasn’t missing anything important. Initially I tried the sugar water first thing that morning but found that it just made me ravenous so gave the ELOO (two tablespoons a try around 3 PM and within a few hours noticed a difference. I remember making a special dessert for that night’s dinner and thinking after I had eaten half of the meal on my plate, “ I really don’t want any dessert!” That for me is huge because I have a major sweet tooth. I learned very quickly that I didn’t need to put a huge portion of food on my plate because there was no way I could finish it. I also learned the best time to take the oil to get the full effect of the appetite suppression, which for me was 2 tablespoons before my coffee in the morning making sure to leave a two-hour flavorless window. My second two tablespoons were at around 3 PM or so. I started with ELOO but switched to grape seed oil and a few other oils to see what would happen but the best effect by far was the ELOO. I started officially on May 1/06 and by June 18th I was down 19 pounds. I lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks and then it slowed after that. Once the weight loss slowed I tried eating low glycemic for the first little while and then switched to low carb to give that a go. I was planning on taking a trip to the UK August 19th and so was hoping to reach goal weight by then so that is the reason for trying new diets. That is the beauty of SLD it works with any diet or no diet at all. It just makes any eating plan that much more doable. As for exercise I was always pretty consistent even in the past with my workouts, usually 30 minutes walking on the treadmill 3-5 times a week so that remained pretty static all through my weight loss period, although as the pounds came off I started running instead of walking for the 30 minutes and continue that to this day. I am not going to say there weren’t times due mostly to emotional reasons that I didn’t have a binge or two because I did but I would always start fresh the next day and found that even if I skipped a few days of taking the oil the appetite suppression was still there to a point. I didn’t usually skip any more than a few days at the most. There were weeks when I wouldn’t lose anything. I think I hung at 167 for quite awhile but eventually I would start losing again. I was able to lessen the amount of oil to 1 Tablespoon once a day usually around 3-4PM by July 20th and still get the appetite reducing effect.
I didn’t reach goal by August 19th as I had hoped but I did leave for England a lot thinner so I was happy about that. I even lost weight when I was on holiday by eating all kinds of foods that were foreign to me and trying a new beer or wine from time to time which supports Seth’s theory about foods that are unfamiliar to us. I found I had very little appetite the whole time I was in the UK and even in Paris where food is such a novelty found I didn’t even want to try some of the exotic pastries and other decadent things that were so abundant. I lost four pounds while on holiday without taking a drop of oil and by September 14th weighed in at 151 just one pound short of goal.
My weight to this day is around 149 although it sometimes fluctuates to around 151 depending on if I eat salty food or not but I am very happy with how I look and especially how I feel in my clothes. I take around 1.5 Tablespoons of ELOO daily as maintenance and have even skipped it for a few days from time to time. I still feel the control I felt with my appetite and even when I have a splurge once in awhile it is never anything close to what I would have eaten in the past. I know from the forum that the diet doesn’t always work as quickly and as effectively for some as for others and I am soooo very blessed that it has worked this well for me. I just wanted to say that if you are trying it for the first time really give it a good try. It is not a one size fits all kind of a diet and sometimes it does need a bit of tweaking here and there. All I can say is give it a good go. I am finding that initially when I was losing weight not too many people were all that interested in trying it but now that I have lost 40 pounds and seem to be maintaining the loss more and more people are asking me how I did it? My 22-year-old daughter is finally willing to give it a try and seems to be getting good results when she follows it properly. Initially she thought I was out to lunch, but the proof is in the pudding.
Hopefully this testimonial will help someone else who has been struggling as I have. I wish everyone the best and hope that you all reach your weight loss goals. I also want to thank Seth for the Shangri La Diet, it changed my life for the better and I am sure it will do the same for many others.

| wow Monicka... I am so glad this diet worked for you...It's the first time in my life I've heard of it. I am right now on a 1200-calorie diet...which is good because I am not that hungry...maybe I can combine my diet with yours....What exactly I have to do?

Hello chobesita
It is a great plan because you don't have to struggle but according to the forum it doesn't always work for everyone, but you are right it can be combined with other diets such as the 1200 calories a day plan you are on. I was rarely hungry on it.
There is a book by the same name and a great support system on the forum just google Seth Roberts and you will come across it. It is basically taking flavourless calories in a two hour window (that is one hour before you eat and an hour after you take the oil) You cannot have any flavours whatsoever! No gum you can't even brush your teeth. I used ELOO which is extra light olive oil not the dark green stuff that has flavour. Some people use sugar water ( I know sugar water has flavour but according to Seth your brain doesn't recognize it as flavour) It is all based on science and tests done on rats. I would join the forum and you will get tons of advice from SLDers. If it works for you,you will find that you have very little appetite and sometimes will even forget to eat.
I have kept that weight off and feel pretty good. Best of luck to you.

Your story has me really psyched, Monica!
I'm going to try the olive oil (I'm not sure that the "EL" stands for) plus counting calories and listing all my food starting Tuesday. That will give me exactly one month before I have a major birthday. I don't want to start the next decade as fat as I am now and I don't want to get a new driver's license that says 6 tons after "weight."

I am so glad Sylphide!!
First to clarify the EL stands for extra light olive oil. Do not make the mistake and get extra virgin because it has too much flavour. There is also grapeseed oil which is quite flavourless and I know some people have used refined walnut oil, there is an excellent one by Spectrum that you can get at your health food store. The forum is amazing and you will get lots of support and great ideas on how to tweak things so it keeps working for you. You have to kind of play with the amount of oil you drink in order to get the maximum AS or appetite suppressant. Also make sure that you have a two hour flavourless window at least an hour before you take the oil and an hour after you take the oil, this is crucial!!
I would love to hear how it works for you. Please keep me posted. I think once the AS kicks in you will be blown away!!!
All the best Monica

| wait Monica..I don't understand the part where you have to wait and hour before the oil? and an hour after the oil...so how is it? after I eat something I wait an hour to drink the oil, and and hour after I drink the oil to eat something?...so it's like two hour and in the middle I should drink the oil?..and how many Tbsp should I drink daily?

Hi Chobista
What I meant by a two hour window is that you can not have any flavour for two hours an hour before you take the oil and an hour after you take the oil. For instance if you have breakfast at 8AM then you wait for an hour before you have the oil, then take the oil at 9 AM and wait at the very least one more hour before you eat anything brush your teeth, smoke, chew gum, use mouthwash or anything else that would introduce flavour into your mouth. As far as the amount of oil it all depends on the person. When I weighed 189 I started with two tablespoons in the morning when I first woke up and then two tablespoons around 3 in the afternoon keeping in mind that two hour flavourless window. As I lost weight I used less and less oil until I was taking only 1 tablespoon at around 3 PM and that was enough to keep my appetite under control all day. Keep in mind that a tablespoon is 15 ml so use a measuring spoon and not a regular tablespoon to measure or you won't get enough oil. Also keep in mind that each tablespoon is 120 calories so you don't want to overdo the oil either.
I think it would be very beneficial for you to pick up the book it is an easyread and you will get a lot of extra ideas other than the oil such as crazy spicing and why SLD works the way it does. The author is a wonderful fellow and you can access him on the forum and he is very approachable. The diet has also been showcased in Women's World magazine and I am pretty sure he is going to be in First for Women also as he asked me if I was willing to be in the article. I unfortunately did not have a full length picture of my before weight, just a head and shoulders shot so they turned me down. I hated having my picture taken when I was overweight and avoided cameras like the plague lol.
Anyway please keep me posted and do not hesitate to ask me anything you may want to know. Best of luck

Hi,
Well, this is my first attempt at this. I'm not sure it will get on the post list but I'll give it a shot. I'm a brand new member and not a real tech guy.
First of all, congratulations to you, KGreg. I know how tough it is to lose weight. I'm in my mid 50's and for the past 25 years I have lost and gained back, anywhere from 30-50 lbs on all sorts of quickie diets. The results were the same. I gained it back.
I'm happy to say that as of today, I've lost 40 lbs since mid July. I'm doing it the old fashioned way with diet and exercise. I'm counting calories, eating the right kind of food and getting up at 5:00 am every day to work out. It's still a process but by the time I get to the point where I've lost 100 lbs I'm sure it will be a lifestyle change.
One thing I'd like to mention. In the past, I've always approached weight loss as something I was going to do for myself. I think this is the wrong motivation. I have a wonderful wife, two great kids (grown) and a grandson. I have to think of them and be around for them and involved with there lives. I'm doing this for the people I love most and I've found that this helps motivate me more.
Best of luck to you and everyone else. Don't give up. This can be done. It takes work, dedication and focus but it can be done!!
Bert
