I thought I would share like the others on this forum.

About 2 years ago, my dad had heart troubles. After some tale tale signs he went to the doctor and was told that he had 3 heart attacks without even really knowing it.

He had stints put in and decided to try to get healthy. He was 320lbs at the time. He bought an excersice bike, but couldn't seem to use it. For whatever reason, it sat up collecting dust.

After the troubles with my dad and learning that the problem was hereditary, I looked at myself in the mirror and decidied I didn't want to go through the same thing. I drug the bike out of the dark, into my room and started using it. Every day I would ride, starting out light and adding more time/resistance as the weeks went by. I started at 260lbs, 5 minutes a day. Moved up to 10, then 15, then 30. Every day, I wouldn't let myself miss a day unless I was just to sick to move. During this time I cut out caloric drinks, moved to alot of water and diet dr pepper. I was really really out of shape, and I thought it was best to start with a light and easy workout so I wouldn't get worn out and just quit altogether.

I lost 40 pounds pretty fast, in 4 or 5 months. After 6 months of riding I needed a change. I bought a treadmill and have lost an additional 50 pounds. I am down to 170lbs, 12 inches off my waist, and feeling a good deal better. I can even run a mile, something I never thought would be possible.

An additional plus with buying the treadmill was that my father has started working out now. He walks, it's easier for him than riding. He has lost about 20lbs so far and after seeing my tranisition he is determined to work his way to a healthier self. I've tried to help him as a coach the best I can.

So to those struggling, putting it off, or looking for an easy way. The only sure fire way to loose weight, stay healthy and keep it off is conviction. If you have to start out with only 5 minutes a day and work your way up, do it. Eventually you will be able to workout like a pro. Make conscience efforts to change the way you eat and eventually they won't be conscience efforts anymore, they will become second nature.

Small subtle changes and slow steady weight loss were most succesfull for me.

Read! The internet is a great source of information and this site helped me a great deal.

What an inspiration to your father!  I think the most difficult part of weight loss is finding the motivation in yourself to take the steps to start and keep with "the program."  Having the example of another's success can really help with the motivation.

We both inspired each other. His entire health ordeal is what got me to look at myself in a different way. It's not surprising though. When you learn you might have a congenital heart defect inherited from your father it goes along way to changing ways. Sometimes a life scare is perfect motivation.
