I thought this should be in Success Stories because with successful weight loss comes clothes that are now too big.
I have some wonderful new clothes that have only been worn once or twice and some others that still have tags on them. They are now too big for me. As much as I want them out of my closet (so as not to tempt me away from my healthy eating and exercise plan) they cost a fortune. I don't know anyone they would fit.
Does anyone have recommendations?
I have considered charity, but their true value is way beyond what they would fetch at Goodwill or Salvation Army. These are slacks, skirts, blouses, suits, and jackets that might fetch 10% of their value at a thrift store. I almost feel like the charities won't benefit enough from the gift.
What do you think?

There are "up-scale" resale shops around, or perhaps a friend at church or in your work sphere of influence could greatly use and be honored to wear the pass-alongs. Clothes don't make the person -- your generous spirit will light up someone's heart!
It amazing what benefits we receive when we give our "best" without expecting anything in return. Bless your heart!

| Paint-Mom has a good point. I wish I had given more thought to it before I just tossed my own clothes. The other day a co-worker asked what I did with my old clothes and I said I threw them out. She just looked at me and said "I bet they would have fit me" and I felt so bad. I honestly thought that someone would have been offended if I'd offered them my second-hand clothes. "Are you saying I'm fatter than you now?" "Are you saying I'm too poor to buy my own clothes?" Now, too late, I realize it would have been a welcome gift.

I too have given away clothes to friends. Have been exchanging clothes all my life. As a child Mom had a friend, her daughter was a few years older. It started then. I recently exchanged with a coworker. She passed to me what she could no longer wear and I gave her mine. We have both tipped the scales in opposite directions. I have also donated. We have a Missing Children's "Store" Thrift store who's profits go to help with missing children. There is a group in our area that have a store for women who are "getting it back" Usually battered women. Clothes them for free for job interviews. If you have nice "work-wear" it's a good cause. Check it out in your area. I will not donate to Good Will!! I think it's outrageous the $$ they charge since it has become vogue to shop consignment and thrift stores. There are people there who really can't afford, and how do they know. Ask for a copy of their last tax return?
Check around if you want to do good with your hand me downs.

This got me to thinking -- recently a younger woman here at work -- she used to give me large sacks of clothes when she no longer wanted/ or could use them -- these were kids clothes as well, since her two were several years older than my three. I was a single mom at the time and I did so very much welcome them. I still have some of those t-shirts that I wear to work to this day -- honestly this has been 7yrs ago. And just recently she gave me three dresses that she could no longer wear -- these were size 16. I could just barely wear them at the time she passed them to me....now they are getting to the point of fitting very loose. I am not quite ready to pass these along -- but soon. I am finally getting to wear the 14s in my closet that seemed destined to remain on the hanger six months ago. I've been up/down on the scales this entire month of June, but I am determined and will stay on plan--even if I do slow the pace ever so often with tasty indulgences --
I've even thought I might open my open own "dress barn". My teens girls go thru clothes like a flash. I've actually stopped trying to buy them things. Resale shops are fairly popular here in our college town.
Enjoy your day - - blessings to each of you.

| You bring back memories. Near "Home" there was an store actually called Dress Barn, though it was't consignment or thrift. It was painted that redwood color (stain) nad white. Go for it girl!

Thank you Personsmom, I hadn't even thought of the battered womens shelter. I regularly donate oral care items - floss, toothbrushes and such to Cornerstone Manor, a local shelter.
When my youngest outgrew diapers, I had been buying them by the case and had nearly two cases to donate.
These are women who frequently have fled by night with nothing but their children and the clothes on their backs.
Thank you Paint-mom for making me realize how much I have, and what a great opportunity this is for me to help others!

i am selling a few of my bigger clothes that i only just bought last year on ebay. I have already spent a fortune buying smaller sizes so i figure that selling the bigger ones will help fund my new wardrobe. I think the hardest part about the new wardrobe bit is the way you go down in sizes, and you have to buy then 3 months later ya buying again, cos that size is NOW too big!! ahh..
i just bought the bare essentials to start with (like under garments) and now that i am at my goal weight i can buy whatever i want ..
and yes, getting rid of the bigger sizes is one of the best ways to remind urself that you cant let the weight come back on!!
blessings everyone..

Most of my large teeshirts were commandeered by my wife. She never did say why she likes wearing them.
(And I'm too afraid to ask, since although she weighs only 115 pounds, she packs a fearsome punch!)

Does your area have a Job & Career Center or charity that helps low income people get back into the workforce? If you have good work clothes, they would really help some people out.

You know my wardrobe is full of clothes in such a range of sizes!! Before my current successful weight loss and maintenance program (43 days of maintenance so far) I had been a yo yo dieter so I always kept the "fat" clothes just in case..
I think the time has come for me to get rid of them and this forum posting has helped me realise it!!!
On the weekend, I'm going to do a massive clean out and if it don't fit, it's getting chucked!!
I'm scared!!

| My "before" clothes are at the top of my wardobe just stting there at the moment. The pile had two skirts at the beginning, and now it's got all but one of my jeans, etc. I just added another one there yesterday, because even the belt couldn't help.

I didn't end up doing it... I just want to make sure I can maintain my weight before I do it..
I think what I will do is put them in storage for a year. If I maintain for a year, then that's a pretty good indication right!!!
So far my maintenance has gone for two months... I'm a sixth of the way there...

I can sew, so I altered most of them myself... I still haven't gone through the whole stack yet... whenever I get time I get round to fixing a couple more. I did give one pants that were already too large before I lost weight away though.

| My old clothes were XXL and the pants were too big to alter. Over the period of a few months I donated almost all of my old clothes. I take comfort in knowing that someone else is using my clothes and they are not just sitting in the back of my closet. I also wanted to make sure they weren't there in case I started to gain a little weight.

AMEN to that. Just the fact that I have NO larger clothes is a good motivator for me to "Back away from the pie"!
Just as soon as I "shrink" out of a particular size, I take all the clothes of that size and take them to either a homeless shelter or a family crisis center. (good tax deducion also)

I would post your whole lot of clothes on ebay or craigslist. Thatway someone who will appreciate and benefit from them can get them instead of just giving them away

As soon as my clothes get too big for me, I donate them to a thrift store and buy some clothes in my new size while I'm there. Sometimes they're really nice and they let me trade my old clothes for new ones, which is great, 'cause that means FREE CLOTHES!
But yeah, I get rid of EVERYTHING that doesn't fit, because if I have the bigger clothes around I'm more likely to gain weight.

| I am looking forward to having to get rid of some "fat" clothes. I will be taking my fats to Goodwill. I've learned that there is a market somewhere for everything you can think of. Just look at Ebay! By taking things to GW, I feel like they will find a new home with someone who will appreciate them. I shop there regularly and have found some beautiful (and cheap) things. I'm having a hard time now not buying things that will fit "when I'm thin." As far as the quality of things at GW, I've found beautiful, expensive things there for pennies on the dollar, and I have champagne taste. I am amazed at what I find there and at resale shops. Now you all know about my second addiction!!!

I did keep ONE pair of size 64 pants and ONE 5X shirt.
I also have a belt that I wore from day one of my journey that I addeed holes to at 1 inch increments till I the day hit maintenance...
(It goes around me TWICE now!)
I will keep these FOREVER as a reminder of how I almost "ate myself to death" so that I will NEVER be tempted to return. I should have them "mounted" in a shadowbox. (Hmmmm good idea)

Has anyone ever heard of Freecycle? I found this worked great for my old clothes.
Try searching yahoo groups to see if there is one in your area. I posted my old clothes on the message board and someone who was in need of them contacted me by email. You give the items away, it helps someone, and they stay out of the landfill. You can meet to give them to someone or in my case, I just left them on my front porch and she came and picked them up.

Oh! This is one of my biggest beefs with losing weight. I lost alot weight three years ago and have been the same size since. So, I stocked up on cloths. I went up and down a few times, but still could fit in that size. Now, after struggling with a thyroid problem I am finally losing weight again. AGGGHHHHGG!!! I went through my shorts two days ago and only one pair fit. I have a ton of new cloths that no longer fit. Some of the shorts I got last year on clerance, never even wore them. Not to wine! But, You should of seen me when I had to buy new underware and bras- not a fun experience. It's either granny pants or thongs. Come on.... geeezzz
I have come to the conclusion that I will go broke buying cloths......
I have found that shopping at the goodwill, st. vincents works well when losing weight. Then when I get to my goal, lookout mall.....here I come...lol
Just a thought, someone should start a clothing exchange for people losing weight.
