I am 58 years old and 6' 3" tall. In December 2004 I weighed 330 lbs, my blood pressure was 150/90, my cholesterol was 230 (and mostly bad) and my blood sugar was 115. It was time for me to take control and do something about my health. As of June 17, 2005, I weigh 268 lbs, my blood pressure is 110/67, my cholesterol is 165 (and mostly good) and my blood sugar is 93. I still have 58 lbs to got to reach my goal of 210 lbs. When I was talking with my Doctor in December, it occured to me that my weight loss goal was exactly the weight of Jasper, my Golden Retriever.
For the first time in my life, I made a New Year's resolution to loose weight. I asked my doctor for a medical referral to the Wellness Clinic at our local hospital, which he did. In January I met with the Clinic's Exercise Physiologist and the County Extension Nutritionist. I bought a small spiral notebook and started writing down every thing I ate and how many calories I was consuming. This is how I came to find caloriesperhour.com. I was trying to find out how many calories were in a bowl of home made chili (its not as much as you might think).
Using caloriesperhour.com, product labels and some "google-ing", I started tracking my daily calories and plotting them on an Excel spread sheet.
I began supervised exercising three times a week at the Wellness Clinic for 30 - 40 minutes each time and attended a weekly series of 20 minutes lectures (I guess you would call them) on nutrition, health and exercise.
Right now, my daily calories are averaging 2025 and I'm loosing 2 lb per week. At the beginning, I was loosing almost 3.5 lb per week but that has slowly eased off to a more sensible rate.
A typical menu for me is:
Breakfast: 2 eggs basted, 1 1/2 slices of fried bacon, 1 slice of whole grain bread and 6 oz of skim milk. Coffee
AM snack: 1 Orange or 1 Apple. Sometimes a Krispy Kream donut.
Lunch: Turkey, Ham, or Tuna Sandwich on Rye bread with reduced fat Miracle Whip and a slice of 2% milk cheese. Carrots and/or celery. Tea sweetened with Equal.
PM snack: Fat free, artificially sweetened live culture yogurt (80 cal)
Dinner: Chicken, Lean Pork or Fish grilled or sauted with a starch and a vegetable. Water.
Oh, and 4 double Scotches in the evening (no kidding).
This really has not been hard for me. I am brutally honest about documenting everything I eat. I use a scale, if I am uncertain about serving size and my whiskey is measured, often by my wife. I plot my weight loss and tape in to the mirror in the dinning room. It is very satisfying to see the plot points go lower and lower each week.
Thanks Peter, you have been a helpful resource.

Old Goat, congrats from me, too!
jr13, when I've stopped eating junk (which was like injecting sugar directly into my blood) and started eathing healthy I've felt listless for the first few weeks till my body adjusted. Then never felt better! Hang in there.

| Way to go, Old Goat! I've lost about a third of your Golden Retriever in seven weeks, doing something very similar to what you're doing. I, too, use an Excel spreadsheet, and your diet sounds a lot like mine except for the Scotches. (I have half & half in my coffee and otherwise keep the Perrier and San Pellegrino companies in business.) Congratulations on your loss.

Sounds like you are doing a better job than me on the hydration issue which is supposed to be a good thing (can't believe I said that). You didn't mention any exercise or what your start weight was. I've hit a bit of a plateau as I do every 10 pounds or so. Guess it's time to drop a few hundred calories and push the exercise. Also on the exercise front, I'm now alternating weight training with aerobic workouts on the theory that muscle (even at rest) burns more calories than fat. I'll check back with an update in a week or two. Happy calorie counting and Good luck on your Golden Retriever.

| I started at 303 on May 10th. Today is the last day of Week 8, and I'm down 28 lbs. Exercisewise, for now, I'm just using a pedometer and trying to do more walking. I've done the bodybuilding thing before, although it's been 11 years since I stopped, and plan to pick it up again when I get closer to my goal. I'm a woman, 6'1", so my goal is somewhere between 140 and 170 (realistically, probably closer to 170).
